Parent-Child Attachment Play (PCAP)
Parent-Child Attachment Play (PCAP) is a gentle, play-based approach designed to strengthen the attachment bond between parents and children. This method uses child-centered, non-directive play and is rooted in groundbreaking research on how secure attachment is established in early relationships. Recent studies highlight a critical parental skill linked to secure attachment in children: the ability to reflect on their child’s emotions, empathize with their feelings, and respond in a sensitive, consistent, and predictable way. Known as Reflective Functioning in the research literature, this skill can be nurtured through PCAP.

The program typically involves working directly with the parent or caregiver over 8-10 weeks. Sessions focus on developing three core skills essential to secure attachment:

-
Reflective Functioning: Understanding and empathizing with the child’s feelings.
-
Child-Led Play: Allowing the child to guide play in a safe, supportive environment.
-
Containment and Boundaries: Establishing a sense of safety and structure for the child.

The PCAP practitioner demonstrates these skills during sessions, which the parent practices and applies during weekly, one-on-one playtimes with their child (15–30 minutes) using a small selection of toys. Over time, parents are supported in integrating these skills into daily family life, fostering long-term changes in the parent-child relationship.
